Read The Leavers by Lisa Ko! I really loved this book when I read it. As an Asian-American, I often feel myself not knowing whether I belong more to the American community or the Korean community. This book explores the complexities of having 2 very different identities, especially as one grows up in different cultures. In The Leavers, Deming grows up as a Chinese boy, raised and embraced by Chinese culture. However, after his mother disappears, Deming is adopted by a White family and becomes Daniel. Deming feels pressure to be more American, and slowly loses his Chinese culture. This pressure is often felt by many people who struggle with their identities, whether that be racially, sexually, religiously, etc. I recommend reading this book, whether you struggle with your identity in some way or not. It will open you up to a new perspective and insight into how cultural collisions can truly impact peoples' lives.
